Factual: What are the common causes and consequences of revolutions?
Revolutions are often caused by dissatisfaction from people of the country/area, which when they reason what causes their dissatisfaction, it often leads to the country/area’s leader. This then leads to the people creating a group for change that will try to negotiate with the leader of the country/area to make changes, which will often end up with leader of the group neglecting the opinions of the people. In essence, what mainly causes a revolution is the neglect and mistreatment of the people of the country/area hence leading to the people violently forcing their government to change, in other words, starting a revolution. With the Haitian revolution, the slaves were not satisfied with their terrible working conditions and harsh labor work. This was caused by the French plantation owners who treated them like property instead of actual people.
The consequences of revolutions can are often Usually, revolutions achieve the changes that they were fighting for, and the overthrowing of the country/area’s leader. In the Haitian revolution, the emancipation of slaves and independence from France was achieved. Freeing the slaves was the change they wanted, while independence from France was overthrowing their leader.

Conceptual: To what extent do revolutions bring about change? How do revolutions affect ordinary people?
The reason revolutions take place is to bring about change in the country and the people’s lives. A revolution can change a country politically, socially, culturally, and economically. In the Haitian revolution, the island changed from a French colony to a self-governed state. This was a significant change as the people went from being under a harsh rule to governing themselves. Its social change was the emancipation of slaves, as the people were no longer separated into different classes with the slaves at the bottom. They had the same social status, thus eliminating discrimination and improving society. The economic change was the reduced rely on plantations as economic trade. As the slaves were freed and the plantations burned, plantations were not popular, allowing Haiti to widen its economic market.
Ordinary people are those that are not part of the military or any type of revolutionary or counter-revolutionary activity. During the revolution, the daily lives of these ordinary people would be disrupted. In the Haitian revolution, there was a lot of violence such as the civil war between L’Ouverture and Diguad that lasted for a year, which would have made it unsafe for ordinary people to be in public. There were also occupation movements, such as when the petit blancs occupied Port-au-Prince. This would have also disrupted their daily lives. After the revolution, these political, social, and economic changes would have affected their lives and their views on certain issues. WIth the Haitian revolution, people would no longer be under the rule of France, allowing them more rights and freedom. Socially, they were all equal so they led better lives. Economically, instead of a plantation-based economy, people would have more opportunities to explore different jobs.
Debatable: Are revolutions progressive? Do revolutions necessarily bring about change for the better?
Revolutions take place because of the dissatisfaction of the people in a country to the group or people in power. With a revolution, they want a change in leadership that will lead to a better life for people. With this thought in mind, revolutions are meant to be progressive and to bring about change for the better. However, the methods which people take in order to achieve this change might not be the best, as they are often violent and destructive. This will cause many innocent deaths and unnecessary wreckage, which can affect society for the worse. With the Haitian revolution, the slaves were dissatisfied with their working conditions and wanted to overthrow the French in order to free themselves from this inhumane torture. This is a noble and just cause, but the way they achieved it was through a violent uprising.

In the major slave rebellion 1791, they ruined plantations and murdered the plantation owners. While it was a successful rebellion that helped them reach freedom, many casualties have to be taken into account.
In the long run, the revolution did bring about change for the better and achieved its purpose. Not only did the it bring emancipation for the slaves, but it also helped Haiti gain independence from France. Even when considering the destruction the Haitian revolution caused, the results it achieved were much more beneficial to the people of the country then, as well as in the future. |
